Program Description

Body

Join us for a presentation from Anne Madarasz, the Chief Curator and Historian for the Heinz History Center, on the inspirational Nellie Bly.

Nellie Bly was a groundbreaking journalist whose fearless reporting changed the landscape of investigative journalism. Best known for her undercover work, Bly exposed harsh conditions in a mental institution by feigning insanity and gaining admission to the infamous Blackwell's Island Asylum. Her book "Ten Days in a Mad-house" on the mistreatment of women in mental health institutions sparked widespread reform. Bly also famously travelled around the world in 72 days, breaking records and challenging gender norms. Come learn all about her life and work at the library!
